World Dance Photo Workshop #9: Tango Dance

Join us for our ninth World Dance Photo Workshop. This exclusive series of workshops will give us the opportunity to explore vibrant dance traditions from around the world, all without leaving the SF Bay Area. Each workshop will feature a different style of traditional dance. Our stunning next workshop features Tango dance, both traditional and contemporary. Argentine Tango is a masterclass in visual drama, characterized by a sharp, geometric anatomy of movement where the bodies of two dancers merge into a singular, gravity-defying architecture. For a photographer, the genre offers an exhilarating chance to freeze high-velocity action against moments of profound stillness, capturing the explosive tension of high *boleos* and razor-sharp footwork contrasted with the quiet intimacy of a locked, emotional embrace. For this very special and exclusive workshop, I am thrilled to collaborate with acclaimed Argentine Tango duo **Felipe Martinez and Ayano Yoneda**. Felipe and Ayano are internationally renowned performers and cornerstones of the Bay Area tango community. Having studied extensively under legendary maestros in Buenos Aires, they travel the global festival circuit while maintaining deep roots teaching in the region. Visually, they are spectacular to watch; they both fluidly alternate roles as leader and follower, allowing you to capture distinct, symmetric, and highly versatile compositions. Their dance style heavily emphasizes a gorgeous, intimate close embrace and flawless, text-book technical precision that yields highly structured, striking still frames. Photographers will shoot in a number of timed rounds, with one photographer shooting at a time. Wardrobe, movement styles, lighting, and/or sets will change between rounds. We will be using Pocket Wizards to trigger the studio flashes, so bring one if you have one. We do have some to share if you don't already have a pocket wizard.
