About this event

Mary Lipsey from the Burke Historical Society will discuss how, during the First World War, women mobilized to take the jobs that the soldiers left behind. Almost Forgotten Women and Ms. Lipsey's other books are available to check out from Fairfax County Public Library. Registration is not required, but please register if you would like to receive a reminder email the day before the event. All ages Mary Buckingham Lipsey grew up in Fairfax County, Virginia. She received a BA in History and Sociology from Mary Washington College and a Masters in Middle School Education from Virginia Tech. In June 2003, Mary retired after teaching seventh grade American History for almost thirty years at Lake Braddock Secondary. Since retirement, she has become involved in cemetery preservation. She also enjoyed being a docent at the Smithsonian American History Museum and the National Archives for many years. She served on the Fairfax County History Commission for 16 years and now remains as an advisor to the commission. During retirement, her love of history and research has led her to write several nonfiction books. Also, she is currently participating on the USA 250th birthday celebration plans for Fairfax County.
