About this event
Join Iowa City writer Andy Douglas for a reading and discussion of Strength for What Lies Ahead. Explore practical ways to build balance, resilience, and community in times of crisis through fresh ideas on justice, localism, spirituality, and collective action. “Strength for What Lies Ahead: Restoring Balance in a Time of Crisis”, takes a clear-eyed look at where we stand in terms of climate change and other crises, and how we might better respond. It strategizes around themes of community, emotional and physical resilience, ecological restoration, food systems, economic democracy, spirituality and our relationship with the natural world. It encourages a shift from the social narrative of extraction and separation toward one which emphasizes interconnection, balance and care. Drawing on interviews and research, the book offers hope and practical ways to navigate challenging times, deal with our feelings around the climate catastrophe and work together to create a better future. The book includes a number of conversations with interesting figures, like Fred Meyer of Earthmind, Liz Rog of Center for Belonging, Shawn Berry of LIFT Economy, Sid Jordan of Prama Institute and futurist Sohail Inayatullah. “Sometimes you read a book you’ve hungered for, a book that complicates and clarifies complex ideas, a book that reaches beyond the boundaries of literary style to reveal the urgent need for balance and community in a time of environmental and political turmoil. Strength for What Lies Ahead is that book. Read it not only for its narrative insights but also for the pleasure of personal portraits, the revelatory Action Steps, and the courage of cooperative response” – Patricia Foster, author of Written in the Sky Andy will lead a discussion centered around these ideas, exploring ways in which we can work to prepare for, mitigate and restore in this time of multiple crises.
