Catherine Williams will be the September Guest Artist at VIVA Gallery. She is now a photographer who photographs herself to capture interesting moments. Early on, she always loved drawing people. For years she focused on charcoal portraits and facilitated a successful life drawing group. The interaction with the other artists and the models was her driving force. During the pandemic, her group couldn’t meet, and her creative spark began to dim. She began to experiment with photography, using her phone to take self-portraits – thinking she would draw from the photos. Instead she fell in love with the photography process, and drawing began to fall to the wayside. At first, she would eliminate her face in the images purely due to discomfort in front of the camera, but she soon learned the anonymity was a powerful way to express herself.
