VentiCordi presents: Sound Clouds

VentiCordi Chamber Music will present its next series concert, “Cloud Songs,” on Sunday, April 12 at 2:00 p.m. at the Brunswick Unitarian Universalist Church. A free pre-concert talk by composer Bill Matthews begins at 1:00 pm. Led by Artistic Directors Kathleen McNerney, oboist, and Dean Stein, violinist, VentiCordi is acclaimed for its imaginative programming and dynamic collaborations. Each performance brings together a fresh ensemble of guest artists, creating a distinctive experience for audiences. For this concert, McNerney and Stein will be joined by pianist Anastasia Antonacos, flutist Shion Suzuki, and double bassist Nathan Varga. “Cloud Songs” features a vibrant and expressive program that highlights the color, intimacy, and creativity of chamber music through unexpected instrumental combinations and evocative musical narratives. The program opens with Barbara Harbach’s Four Dances for Two, an animated and expressive conversation between oboe and violin. This is followed by Madeleine Dring’s Trio for Flute, Oboe, and Piano, a charming work infused with wit, elegance, and a blend of British and French stylistic influences. The concert continues with Erwin Schulhoff’s Concertino, which injects modern flair and jazzy rhythms into the unusual trio of flute, viola, and double bass. A highlight of the afternoon will be Alyssa Morris’s Cloud Songs—a 2025 composition that lends its name to the concert—offering a dreamy, atmospheric soundscape for oboe, bass, and piano. The program concludes with Nino Rota’s Trio for Piano, Flute, and Violin, a lyrical and cinematic treasure from the celebrated Italian composer known for his iconic film scores.
