VCU Opera & Symphony present “The Tender Land”
VCU Opera & Symphony present “The Tender Land” at Grace Street Theater in Richmond, VA on Friday, April 24, 2026. Tickets from $20.
We hope you’ll mark your calendars, because award-winning VCU Opera, together with the VCU Symphony, will present Aaron Copland’s The Tender Land, on FRIDAY, APRIL 24 at 7 pm and SUNDAY, APRIL 26 at 4 pm. The Tender Land will be guest directed by James Hampton and conducted by Professor Daniel Myssyk. Aaron Copland’s The Tender Land invites audiences into the wide-open spaces of the American heart. Set on a family farm in the 1930s, this quietly powerful mid-century opera speaks across generations, exploring timeless questions of hope, belonging, and the choices that shape our lives. Copland’s unmistakable “American sound”—spare, lyrical, and deeply expressive—underscores a story that is at once intimate and universal. Though rooted in one family’s experience, The Tender Land reflects struggles and dreams we all recognize, making it a work that feels both distinctly human and distinctly American. Tickets are $7.00 for VCU students and Faculty, $20.00 for General Admission. VCU Music students attend for free.
