Singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Vanessa Collier releases her sixth album, Do It My Own Way, on September 13 via Phenix Fire Records. Recorded live to analog, the project channels the classic Memphis soul of Stax and Hi Records with powerful grooves, horn arrangements, and Collier’s trademark saxophone work. Tracks range from the funk of “Elbow Grease” to the gospel-tinged “Rosetta,” a tribute to Sister Rosetta Tharpe, and the poignant closer “Warrior,” inspired by her mother. The singles “Take Me Back” and “Wild As a Rainstorm” highlight both her songwriting range and her commitment to empowering messages, with the latter already featured on Spotify’s Retro Soul playlist alongside organ legend Rev. Charles Hodges. The title track, “Do It My Own Way,” addresses the sexism Collier has faced in the music industry, standing as both a personal declaration and a call for progress. “I find that most artists I admire—Prince, James Brown, and Bonnie Raitt—went against the grain,” she explains, “and this song assures that I will continue to do the same.” On the album, Collier not only writes and sings but also produces, arranges, and performs on multiple instruments, joined by longtime collaborators including Blues Music Award-winning guitarist Laura Chavez, bassist Scott Sutherland, and drummer Byron Cage.
