About this event
Unveiling of the Fayetteville Heritage Walk Faces and Places of Fayetteville Friday, October 9, 2026 | 4:30 PM Begins at the Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Building, 200 W. Maple Ave. Join the Town of Fayetteville for the unveiling of the first three plaques in a new project celebrating the people and places that have shaped our community. Follow along on a short walk-through town as we share their stories at each stop. Refreshments will be offered at the Fayetteville Welcome Cetner following the event. The unveiling begins at the Memorial Building with Charlie McCoy, who performed many concerts there and contributed greatly to the development of the town park. From there, we’ll walk to the courtyard at the corner of Maple Avenue and Court Street to honor Police Chief Tunney Hunsaker, who spent many years helping traffic move safely and children cross the road. Our final plaque will be unveiled at 147 S. Court St., near Wisteria Gifts, in honor of Thomas Sweeney, Fayetteville’s first Black attorney and a longtime supporter of education for all. These are the first of a series of markers intended to encourage people to explore Fayetteville on foot, remember its history, and share the stories of those who made a lasting mark on the town.
