It's automatic, it's fast, and we can't turn it off. Sometimes those snap judgments are eerily accurate; sometimes they're completely wrong, and we only find out much later. And of course it runs both ways: while we're reading someone, they're reading us, and we rarely know what they're seeing. Tonight is about both sides of that first glance — the impressions we form, and the ones we leave. 1. Think of one of your closest friends today. What was your very first impression of them — and how close was it to who they turned out to be? 2. What do you tend to notice first about a person? A handshake, their eyes, how they treat the waiter? 3. Have you ever been completely wrong about someone — someone you wrote off who became important to you, or someone you instantly liked who let you down? 4. Do you trust your gut about people? Has it gotten better with age, or do you still get fooled? 5. What kind of first impression do you think *you* make? Have you ever been surprised to learn how you came across? 6. Have you ever been badly misread — someone took you as unfriendly when you were shy, or arrogant when you were nervous? Did you ever get to correct it? 7. Do you act differently when meeting someone new — a "meeting people" version of yourself? Is that being polite or being fake? 8. Where do you think your snap judgments come from — experience, upbringing, old stereotypes? Have you ever caught one you weren't proud of? 9. How long does it take to really know someone? Is there a moment when the first impression finally gets replaced by the real person? 10. Has anyone ever given you a second chance after a terrible first impression — or have you given one?
