About this event
This was a lot of fun last November, but a few folks were not able to go, so let's do it again! If you've never been to Wilson, this is a great opportunity to explore one of North Carolina's quaint small towns. This one happens to be home to the Vollis Simpson Whirligig Park, which can't be adequately captured in pictures. It's a city block filled with art in motion - especially impressive on a windy day. Across the street is a museum and gift shop and there are nearby restaurants, breweries, bars, and shops, all within walking distance of the train station. The walk from the train station to the park is 7 minutes (0.3 miles) on sidewalks. We can get lunch from the Whirlidog Cafe, Worrell's Seafood, or Bread and Bottle, all within a block of the park. There is a covered picnic area in the park, so if it's a nice day, we'll get our food to go and eat at the park. There are other dining options within walking distance as well. **Amtrak information:** James and I will be getting on in Cary, but you can board in Raleigh if that's more convenient. ***Boarding in Cary:*** Train leaves at 9:47, so be there NO LATER THAN 9:30. We will probably get there about 9:15 and it's a small station, so we'll be easy to find. There is a 55-minute layover in Raleigh, which is a change from our last trip. We have to switch trains in Raleigh. Rates, according to the Amtrak app on 9/28/26, which could change: Standard adult: $24 for round trip (non-refundable) and $32 for round trip flex ticket, which allows you to get a refund if you cancel before departure. Seniors 65 and older get a 10% discount on all fares. Arrive in Wilson at 12:01 and depart Wilson at 5:31. The Cary Amtrak station has FREE parking. There is a 30-minute layover in Raleigh on the way back, so we get back to the Cary station at 7:26. ***Boarding in Raleigh:*** Train leaves at 11:00. The fares are half as much as the Cary to Wilson rates, but you must pay to park in the garage across from the station, which is…
