UVMC Voice Faculty offer the very best tricks up their sleeves in this day-long workshop for singers. Sections will include Storytelling Through Performance, Managing Performance Energy, Vocal Health, Musicianship for Singers, as well as a supportive, interactive masterclass to take all the new ideas for a test drive. Lunch and teatime snacks will be provided. Workshops: Use Your Voice, Don’t Lose Your Voice, taught by Allison Pollard What actually happens when we sing, and how can we support our voices to stay healthy and efficient? This session offers an accessible look at how the voice works, including the basics of vocal fold function and practical ways to reduce strain and fatigue. Participants will experience and practice simple vocal health techniques and effective warm-ups designed to support ease, flexibility, and vocal longevity. To Belt or Not to Belt, taught by Julie Ness Have you ever wondered how to make that Broadway belt sound? Have you ever wondered if you should? In this workshop, we will go over the process of learning a “techniqued” belt. I will share specific exercises and techniques to help you find your best belt sound. We will also discuss when and why to use this sound and find songs to help you practice. Storytelling Through Song, taught by Jackie Pageau Learn what to do once you’ve learned the notes and words to elevate your performance. Follow a song learning and storytelling journey from start to finish while learning the practical steps that take a song from a beautiful melody to an emotional journey for you and your audience. Musicianship for Singers: Anatomy of a Song, taught by Rose Hegele What makes a song tick? This session builds core musicianship skills for singers by digging into the anatomy of a song. Students will learn to analyze a piece both with and without sheet music, training their ears to catch transitions, changes in timbre, and shifts in musical texture as they happen.
