This talk will examine the background to the Declaration, the selection of Jefferson to write it, his composition of the Declaration, and its significance at the time. The talk will then focus on the phrase, “Freedom,” its omnipresence in American society today, the various interpretations of it throughout American history, some of its inherent attributes, and the fundamental questions it raises.
