In the mid-nineteenth century, Ada (Holly Hunter), a Scottish woman who refuses to speak, agrees to move to New Zealand and there, sight unseen, to marry a very proper settler who, as it will turn out, refuses to listen (Sam Neill). Through playing the piano – aside from a bit of sign language and a few brief written notes, her only form of communication – Ada eventually becomes involved with a decidedly improper neighbor (Harvey Keitel).
