The Library Book by Susan Orlean

In The Library Book, the author weaves her love of books and reading into an investigation of the April 1986 Los Angeles Public Library Fire (which burned for more than 7 hours and consumed and damaged thousands of books) while also delivering the broader story of libraries and librarians. If you access your books thru online libraries (Libby, Hoopla, etc.,) be sure to check availability now. Some books might have a long wait time on one app but be immediately available on the other. Sometimes members experience different borrow times while using the same app/library. Technology?! Even when there is no/short hold time for borrowing a book when the discussion date is posted, that can easily change so reserve your spot soon. Book discussion starts promptly at 6:30 — feel free to come as early as 6pm to eat with early attendees. Look for us at the big table to the left of the entrance. If that table is taken,or if it is too loud there, check for us in the back. As this book about public libraries is now on our calendar, thought I’d pass along the following details of an important upcoming library event: • On October 10, join library supporters across the country in celebrating Let Freedom Read Day by visiting your local library. Stop in to browse the shelves, check out a book, attend a program, use a helpful resource, thank a librarian, or simply enjoy the welcoming space your library provides. Hope to see you at the January 25, 2027 discussion. And yes, we are good for another year as the following members generously donated to keep The Page Turners active for another year: Laurie, Lisa, Carol, Caroline, Joan, Paula, Mac, Lina, Lori, Amber, and Victoria. Thanks to all! Now go read. 🙂
