The Firebrand Books Building: Making an LGBTQ Landmark in Upstate New York
Jeffry Iovannone, Ph.D., will use the iconic Ithaca-baed Firebrand Books to explore the conservation of LGBTQ heritage in Upstate New York. Founded in 1984, Firebrand was a nationally recognized and multiple award-winning feminist, lesbian and anti-racist press. Dr.Iovannone will address the importance of place within LGBTQ history, the process and challenges of recognizing LGBTQ historic sites through local landmark designations, the National Register of Historic Places, interpretative strategies such as historic markers, and ways to work toward a more geographically holistic vision of LGBTQ life and experience in upstate New York and beyond. Dr. Iovannone is a historian, author and educator who holds a doctorate in American studies. This event is free and open to the public.
