Kevin Morby is an American singer-songwriter whose career has traced a path from the Brooklyn indie underground to becoming one of contemporary folk-rock’s most distinctive voices. Born in Lubbock, Texas, and raised in the Midwest, Morby first gained attention as a member of the indie-folk band Woods before forming The Babies with Cassie Ramone. He launched his solo career with 2013’s Harlem River, beginning a prolific run of albums that established him as a thoughtful chronicler of American life. Across records such as Singing Saw, City Music, Oh My God, and This Is a Photograph, Morby has developed a songwriting style rooted in vivid imagery, philosophical reflection, and a deep connection to place. His songs often blend folk, rock, soul, and Americana influences, drawing from traditions associated with artists like Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen, and Tom Petty while maintaining his own conversational, literary voice. Morby’s most recent album, Little Wide Open (2026), marks another major step in his evolution. Produced with Aaron Dessner, the album explores home, memory, love, mortality, and the uncertainty of adulthood, with contributions from artists including Justin Vernon, Sylvan Esso’s Amelia Meath, and Lucinda Williams. Critics praised the record as a career highlight: Pitchfork called it “the most cohesive and tuneful album of Morby’s career,” while The Guardian described it as a work where Morby “mulls over the mystery of life’s big questions.” With Little Wide Open, Morby continues to solidify his reputation as a modern America
