About this event
What did the Cold War look like in the neighborhoods, schools, mills, and communities of the Mahoning Valley? We will explore how global tensions between the United States and the Soviet Union shaped everyday life in Ohio and the Mahoning Valley during the early Cold War era. We will look at civil defense programs, air raid drills, fallout shelters, and the fear of nuclear attack, as well as the local impact of the Korean War. The program also examines one of the most significant constitutional conflicts of the period—the 1952 Youngstown Sheet and Tube strike and President Truman's seizure of the steel mills, culminating in the landmark Supreme Court case Youngstown Sheet & Tube Co. v. Sawyer .
