About this event
($25-$35 + DICE fees | 6:30pm & 8:30pm Shows | 16+) Chicago based Markus Rutz is known for his blues-inflected, soulful trumpet voice and warm, gorgeous tone, earning favorable accolades and radio attention both nationally and internationally. As a composer, Rutz brings a broad range of writing experience and a diverse palette of sounds to his recordings. His most recent release, Many Moons, marks the ninth album from the well-regarded trumpeter and composer, following Storybook (2023) and Penumbra (2024). The album features original music performed in small-group settings with contemporaries from the Chicago music scene. The ensemble sound recalls Rutz’s earlier Blueprints project, expanded through deeper grooves, broader stylistic reach, and increased compositional nuance. Notable recognition has included national exposure on NPR’s Morning Edition & Grammy nomination consideration for music from Blueprints. This performance features saxophonist Brice Winston who also lends his artistic, fiery sound to Many Moons and also the Blueprints albums! Also coming from Chicago is long time musical partner Arian Ruiz who along with Markus makes the core of the group Third Coast Sounds. Original compositions remain central to Rutz’s work, with titles and themes paying homage to people, places, and the idea of unity. His music is performed with a clear sense of fun and playfulness, balancing emotional depth with an inviting spirit.
