Lee Harvey Oswald, a former US Marine with pro-Soviet sympathies, was quickly arrested as the primary suspect. Two days later, as a stunned nation watched on live television, Oswald was shot dead by Dallas nightclub owner Jack Ruby. The Warren Commission concluded Oswald acted alone, but a later congressional investigation found a probable conspiracy.
