Austin Taco History: Tacos, Tejanos, and the Fight against Gentrification Mexican and Tejano communities built Austin's food scene from the ground up, from early 1900s street vendors and family-run cafés to the Tejano restaurants that became neighborhood landmarks. Now, as gentrification reshapes the city and pushes out the very communities that created this culinary legacy, they're fighting to hold onto it. Hear from the people keeping Austin's taco history alive in a city that's forgetting who built it. Our guests include Diana Vasquez-Valera, Tamale House East (since 1958) , Christina Torres, Mi Madre's (since 1990) and Monica Muñoz Martinez, an award-winning author, educator, public historian, and active participant in developing solutions that address racial injustice.
