About this event

Discover the remarkable life and seven-decade career of Roanoke-born artist Dorothy Gillespie with a special screening of Dorothy Gillespie: Courage, Independence, and Color. A painter, sculptor, installation artist, educator, and advocate for women in the arts, Gillespie forged her own path through a rapidly changing art world. Her career touched many of the major artistic movements of the 20th century, from abstract expressionism and decorative abstraction to site-specific installations and public art. Her unmistakable use of brilliant color and sweeping, ribbon-like forms made her work instantly recognizable to legions of admirers. Gillespie also believed art belonged beyond gallery walls. Her vibrant sculptures appeared in museums, universities, airports, civic spaces, and other public settings across the country, bringing art directly into people’s everyday lives. Following the film, Gary Israel, Gillespie’s son and co-producer of the documentary, will take questions from the audience and share personal stories and insights into his mother’s art, life, and legacy. In addition, you can visit the galleries to see examples of Gillespie’s work on view. Experience the story of an artist who spent a lifetime creating on her own terms—and whose journey began right here in Roanoke. Free and welcoming to all, though registration is required to reserve your seat. Add to Calendar Driving? Get Directions Share This! Register Now Venue: Event Category:
