Subverting Style: Latin American Colonial Street Theatre

In this interactive workshop, Professor Rodriguez Quiroz from Oakland University will discuss his experience teaching El Gueguense, a street play/dance from colonial Nicaragua as an alternative in the classical theatre classroom. Although the origin of El Gueguense is still debated, the playscript poses an unique opportunity for the teacher to engage the students in theatrical forms originated on the American continent. A playful, satirical drama full of puns, repetitions, picaresque and subversive spirit! Oscar Omar Rodriguez Quiroz is an assistant professor of theatre at Oakland University. His research focuses on Latin American theatre and Hispanic golden age drama.
