STEAM Sundays: Cryptid Art & Science?

Could a prehistoric creature really have survived in Loch Ness? Is Bigfoot actually prowling the forests of the Pacific Northwest? How would a Mothman fly anyway? Get ready to explore the lore and science that lurks behind our favorite cryptids in our spooky season STEAM Sunday. After learning the history and science that may or may not support the existence of a variety of cryptids we'll experiment by creating some monsters of our own. We'll consider habitat and biology of possible creatures then, armed with needles, thread, buttons, and more, participants will learn the basics of hand sewing as they design and craft their very own sock monsters. Each sock monster is unique, after short demos on the various ways to construct a sock monster, participants will have time to customize their new, adorably scary, plush friends. As they create, participants will be encouraged to imagine the stories behind their creations. There will be time for sharing creations and lore at the end of the session. Bring your curious and creative mind for an afternoon of colorful, science-y fun! This project is best for ages 7+; adults are encouraged to join us and get their craft on. Younger participants may need the help of a grown-up or older sibling. Through a brief lecture and hands-on experimenting and creating, STEAM Sundays allow participants to learn about science, technology, engineering, and math while working on an art project. After learning about a topic, the experimentation and note taking parts of the scientific process will be conducted through a craft. Everyone will go home with a finished project and better understand of each chosen topic. Supplies are limited, registration required.
