About this event

Join us on Thursday, October 29, 2026, in Daniel Recital Hall as Spartanburg Master Chorale presents Sing Democracy 250. Sing Democracy 250 is an urgent and timely call to Americans through choral music to get involved in renewing American democracy for America’s 250th birthday. This project aspires to 1) take an honest look at how America has done in living up to the ideals of the Declaration of Independence, and 2) equip citizens to understand their responsibilities as citizens and inspire each of us to fulfill our obligations to each other and to our country. This music is a testimony to the grandeur, the spirit, and the possibility of our united American nation. This concert will feature The Star Spangled Banner, lyrics by Francis Scott Key, and music by John Stafford Smith, Redeem the Dream by Brandon A. Boyd with lyrics adapted from the Declaration of Independence and Langston Hughes’ poem Let America be America Again, US, lyrics by Celia Ellingson and Gary Aamodt, in coordination with Richard Haass and his book, The Bill of Obligations: The Ten habits of Good Citizens, music by Michael Bussewitz-Quarm, and Lift Every Voice and Sing, lyrics by James Weldon Johnson, and Music by J. Rosamond Johnson. This event is free to attend and is open to the public.
