South African Freedom Day!: McCoy Mrubata and Siyabulela with special guest Steve Turre

South African Freedom Day is celebrated annually on April 27th, commemorating the date of the country's first post-apartheid elections in 1994 in which the people elected Nelson Mandela as president. The holiday recognizes the courageous work of Mandela and other freedom fighters in ending apartheid and securing equal rights for all South Africans. Jazz at Lincoln Center is proud to honor South African Freedom Day with a three-night series at Dizzy's club featuring South African jazz musicians. This show features one of South Africa's living legends of Jazz, McCoy Mrubata, presenting his extraordinary band Siyabulela. "Siyabulela," meaning "we give thanks," offers up McCoy's uniquely joyous and richly melodic music, fusing the musical traditions of South Africa's Xhosa people with America's Jazz traditions
