About this event

Ever wondered how a fluffy pile of wool actually becomes yarn? Have you mastered every yarn-related craft available to you and decided it’s finally time to complete your evolution into full fiber witchery? Either way, it might be time to learn how to make the yarn itself. This three-hour, beginner-friendly workshop will introduce you to handspinning using a Turkish drop spindle. No spinning experience is necessary. We’ll start with just your spindle and leader yarn, getting comfortable with how the spindle moves, how to set it spinning, and how to wind your yarn onto it. Once you’ve gotten to know your spindle, we’ll add fiber! We’ll start with easy-to-spin pin roving so you can focus on adding twist and making yarn without worrying about drafting at the same time. From there, we’ll learn how to draft wool by hand before putting all of those skills together with the park-and-draft method. Along the way, we’ll talk about how twist turns fiber into yarn, how to choose beginner-friendly wool, and how to troubleshoot the inevitable lumps, bumps, breaks, and accidental art yarn that are all part of learning to spin. Best of all, your class materials include your own 3D-printed Turkish drop spindle and wool to take home, so you’ll have everything you need to keep practicing after class. By the end of the workshop, you’ll have made your own handspun yarn, gotten to know your new spindle, and have the foundational skills you need to keep spinning on your own.
