About this event
This August, we’re reading Sky Full of Elephants by Cebo Campbell, a novel that asks a powerful and unsettling question: In a world without white people, what does it mean to be Black? The book came up in our group when Annita suggested it for the club, and it immediately brought to mind earlier morning conversations I’d had with @head_roc (Vance Levy) about social justice, activism, and the importance of listening to perspectives that challenge the ones we’ve inherited. I mentioned to the group that Vance had recommended this book to me before and then, as if the universe likes to remind us how connected things are, Vance reached out the very next day. We’ll be reading through the eyes of Charlie and Sidney, sitting with questions of race, identity, family, trauma, belonging, and what it might mean to imagine a world remade while also asking what wounds and ideas survive even after the old structures are gone. As a white reader, I’m not approaching this book as an authority on the experiences it explores, but as a chance to listen more carefully, reflect more honestly, and make room for perspectives too often filtered through whiteness before they’re heard.
