Skinnfell – The Printed Sheepskin Workshop with Becky Utecht and Sue Flanders

Learn about the history of Norwegian Skinnfell, embellished sheepskins, while block printing and finishing a tanned sheepskin with instructors Becky Utecht and Sue Flanders. Join Becky Utecht and Sue Flanders for a day long introduction to the Norwegian art of skinnfell, an embellished sheepskin. Skinnfell are sheepskins with stitched and finished edges, printed with wood block stamps. They are often sewn together into a warm coverlet, but in this introductory class we will use one sheepskin to create a chair pad, bench cover, or wall hanging. Students will learn about the history of this unique craft while cutting, printing and finishing a provided tanned sheepskin to create a finished piece of about 22″ by 32″. Special attention will be given to the use of the instructors’ Norwegian print blocks and the symbolism of different patterns meant to bring good will to the user. Students will apply a “bridal” edging, which will be completed after class. This class offers a broad overview to this unique craft, which can be applied in many decorative and useful applications for future projects. Prerequisites: Advanced registration required. Ages: This workshop welcomes students 16+. A discounted tuition is available for students ages 16-17 at checkout. Skill level: This workshop is open to all experience levels. Physical: Please note that to complete this project, students need good hand strength and flexibility, as sewing leather is difficult hand work. Tools and Materials: A $115 materials fee covers one full sized tanned sheepskin, use of the print blocks and paint, and other necessary supplies. Materials fee varies based on sheepskin chosen. Students are also encouraged to bring the following tools if possible: a large, clear plastic quilting ruler; a small pair of very sharp scissors; several sturdy metal clips; a leather thimble; and a small jewelry pliers.
