Second Friday Lecture: Courage Defined

Friday, November 13 | 12pm – 1pm | Presented by: Beverly Vallancourt This 45-minute presentation features selected clips from two Civil War video series that tell the remarkable stories of Wisconsin and Illinois men and women who left their homes and families to serve their country. Discover the story of Dr. Samuel H. Everett, the first Union surgeon killed in action, Martin J. Hawkins, a participant in the daring Great Locomotive Chase, and William Shipley, an immigrant and the first soldier from Quincy, Illinois, to die in the Civil War. Along the way, you’ll gain a deeper appreciation for the sacrifices of Union nurses, such as Elizabeth Leebrick, who tirelessly cared for and gathered supplies for the wounded and for volunteer soldiers such as Dyer Walker Hitchcock and Philip Cheek, who struggled to understand the staggering human cost of the war but fought on with courage and fortitude. Through personal stories and historical insights, this presentation reveals the courage, resilience, and humanity that defined those shaped by America’s greatest conflict.
