About this event

Join Mitch Friedman, Tacoma author and founder of Conservation Northwest, for a lively discussion about the history and fate of Washington’s wolves. Prior to European settlement, gray wolves (Canis lupis) could be found throughout Washington State. That population was deliberately eliminated by the 1930s. Wolves wandered back into the state around 2008 and have since grown to about 50 packs. This successful recovery relies on continuing efforts to minimize conflict between wolves, livestock, and people. This is one of several examples in which Washington's ecosystems have recently become wilder and healthier due to collaborative efforts rather than conflict. Mitch Friedman was a conservation innovator and leader for Washington's wild places and wildlife for over 40 years. Washington's celebrated wolf recovery is one of the experiences he shares in his provocative and timely memoir Conservation Confidential: A Wild Path to a Less Polarizing and More Effective Activism. The book is not just a personal history but a strategic guide for more effective activism that achieves real progress without polarization and backlash. He will share his stories and insights.
