About this event

Quantum Computing: What It Is, What It Isn’t, and What It Might Be. Until You Observe It Abstract: An introduction to quantum computing for people who work with data. We build the model from the basics: qubits as unit vectors, gates as rotations, measurement as sampling. That is enough to see why only a narrow set of problems benefit, and why interference rather than parallelism is what does the work. We then take the three main application areas in turn, cryptography, scientific simulation and optimization, and for each one separate what has been demonstrated from what has only been estimated, with reference to published resource figures and the current state of the hardware. Assumes some comfort with linear algebra. No physics background required. Sponsored by LBMC As always free food and drinks. Come at 6PM to socialize and 6:30pm is the presentations.
