Please join the Eta of Indiana Chapter of Phi Beta Kappa at Valparaiso University for “The Place of Freedom: Spatial Practice and Making the World We Want,” a public lecture lead by Phi Beta Kappa Visiting Scholar Jovan Scott Lewis, Ph.D., professor of geography at the University of California, Berkeley. Hosted by the Department of Geography, Meteorology, and Environmental Science, Christ College – The Honors College, and the Institute of Leadership and Service, this lecture examines freedom as an everyday spatial practice rather than an abstract ideal, analyzing how struggles over land, neighborhoods, and community – as well as imagined desires – constitute core political questions about who freedom is actually for and how it is achieved. The analysis explores freedom as directional practice, as movement toward rather than possession of, revealing why making place becomes the necessary work of collective futures. This special event will take place on campus at the Duesenberg Recital Hall in the Valparaiso University Center for the Arts on Monday, October 19, at 6 p.m. A reception will follow.
