About this event
You've probably heard of OpenTelemetry. You may have heard less about Prometheus, which has been quietly collecting production metrics for over a decade. Prometheus has a large ecosystem of exporters which support collecting metrics from roughly 350 systems like Kubernetes, Linux VMs, or Postgres. OpenTelemetry has support for about 100, and a lot of those overlap. Two communities building the same functionality twice, neither with enough people to maintain it all. That's starting to change. Using a Prometheus exporter from a Collector today means running it as its own pod and scraping it over HTTP. It can now run inside the Collector instead: one binary, one deployment, no scrape hop. I'll build one in front of you. So far that's been done for a few of the 350, and getting even that far took work across two communities that share no governance. What you'll leave with: \- Where they diverge: Prometheus has a massive head start on system coverage\, OpenTelemetry has the pipelines and the semantic conventions\. How to get both\. \- How to take your favorite Prometheus exporter and keep it relevant in an OpenTelemetry world \- A behind the scenes look at how this work has progressed in both communities \- Where we still need help\, and how easy it is to get involved We'll meet at the [Improving Training Center](https://www.improving.com/locations/cleveland/) in Independence, right off of I-77/Rockside Rd **\#\# About the Speaker** ## **Kyle Eckhart** is a Principal Software Engineer with more than a decade of industry experience.
