Preschool Program: Needle felted pepparkakor with Jen Newburg

ASI’s Preschool Program creates opportunities for families to experience Swedish art, culture, and traditions together. Join us in November to explore the art of needle felting with felter Jen Newburg. Preschoolers and their favorite grown-ups explore Swedish and Swedish American culture through ASI’s Preschool Program. Designed for children ages 3-5 and one accompanying adult, this intergenerational, hands-on experience encourages families to learn side by side through mansion exploration, creative play, circle time, and slöjd (handcraft). This November, preschoolers will prepare for the Jul season by creating needle felted pepparkakor (gingerbread cookies). Children can use their finished creation for imaginative play or hang it as a festive tree ornament. Along the way, families will discover Jul traditions through hands-on activities that engage all five senses. Teaching artist Jen Newburg will introduce preschoolers to the art of needle felting as they gently interlock wool fibers to create their ornaments. This beginner-friendly project provides a fun, age-appropriate introduction to slöjd while building creativity, confidence, and fine motor skills. Additional information: This program takes place in Paulson Hall, located on the lower level of the Turnblad mansion. Please arrive 15 minutes before the program begins to allow time for check-in. Check in at the front desk upon arrival. A Visitor Service Associate will direct participants to Paulson Hall. If you arrive before the front doors open, use the buzzer by the blue wall to gain access. Registration includes admission for one preschooler and one adult. The program limits attendance to one adult per registered preschooler. Adult accompaniment and advance registration are required. Museum admission is included with program registration.
