About this event
You are invited to join us as we continue our journey through the history of ancient western philosophy by reading the Phaedrus, in which Plato investigates the soul's erotic longing and its relationship to the whole cosmos. In November we will read from the beginning through the end of Socrates' challenge to Lysias' speech (Stephanus numbers 227a-237b). Additionally, participants are encouraged to read the Introduction to the text provided by Nehamas and Woodruff in the Hackett translation. A free copy of the reading is available at the SST Reference Desk, on the 2nd Floor of the Central Library. Electronic and audio copies are available by emailing BPLPhilosophy@gmail.com. Participants are encouraged to read and re-read the material several times to encourage a sense of intimacy with the text to contribute to a quality discussion. We will discuss the Phaedrus for several months, breaking it down into pieces as described above. Doors open for the program at 6:00PM; the discussion begins at 6:15. This is the evening section of the program; we will revisit the same section of text during the afternoon section of the program, later in the month. Participants are welcome to attend either or both discussions, as they're rarely exactly the same.
