Performance: What Season Is It, America?

From Pride to Election Day 2026, the Brooklyn Museum marks the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence with Drawing America: US@250. A season of art installations, programs, and partnerships, Drawing America honors those who have imagined a more equitable future and fought for the promise of our democracy—and those who continue to do so today. A life has seasons. So does a family. So does a friendship. Perhaps a country does too. —Joshua-Michéle Ross and Keith Yamashita Sit down with artist Keith Yamashita to consider the state of the United States. A poet, photographer, and social-practice artist, Yamashita asks, “What season is it, America?” For five days this October, he and sound artist Joshua-Michéle Ross will be in residence at the Brooklyn Museum, inviting you to consider your answer to that question. As you enter the Beaux-Arts Court, you’ll be surrounded by hundreds of poems, photographs, and pieces of Americana arranged in a 250-foot circle. Wander around the circle to read, look, and remember, selecting works that resonate with you. If you like, join Yamashita at a table to share what you chose and listen to others’ choices. A photograph might recall someone’s childhood. A poem might speak to someone’s grief. An image that ostensibly shows a shared American history may live very differently in the memories of two people sitting beside one another. Ross will compose a new live score each day—responding in real time to the room and the people moving through it. The space will be filled with the gentle, unfolding soundtrack of the seasons.
