About this event
Learn production methods, with hands-on practice, to save a story of someone you love or share a history you would love to tell so you can create an oral history project from start to finish. We honor the birth of Griot Queen Mother Mary Carter Smith with a workshop on the practice of oral history. Queen Mother Mary was a Baltimore educator, who then created a national movement of storytelling in the African oral tradition. She co-founded the Griots’ Circle in Baltimore and the National Association of Black Storytellers. This workshop will introduce you to the skills you'll need for high-quality projects. • Choose your narrator and goals • Figure expenses • Prepare questions • Master effective interview techniques • Protect your narrator’s right to privacy and dignity • Know production methods and equipment to record, preserve, and store your recordings • Explore how to share your stories with audiences • Practice interviewing other participants hands-on practice using your phone Pass It On: Black Storytelling in Baltimore is a weeklong series of events celebrating the art of Black oral history and the birth of Griot Queen Mother Mary Carter Smith (February 10, 1919 - April 24, 2007).
