Derek Nicholas (Red Cliff Band Ojibwe) is the founder of Wiisinig LLC and author of the Indigenous cookbook Through Food We Know Ourselves. Join Derek for a lively discussion about the importance of wild rice and incorporating wild foods into our modern diets. Derek will demonstrate a recipe utilizing wild rice and other foraged ingredient, sharing his take on the connections between food and identity for the Anishinaabeg people as he cooks. ASI’s food programs connect people as we celebrate, learn, and share stories together through cooking workshops, demonstrations, dinners, and lectures. ASI’s Our Shared Table series highlights our neighbor’s kitchens, and how food traditions are preserved and changed through the universal experience of migration and exchange. Additional information: This is a demonstration-style class that includes a few tastes; students may want to eat a light meal before class.
