Orchids 101

About this event

Participants receive a lecture and demonstration of basic orchid culture, demonstration of mounting your orchid. Each participant will have a hands on mounting class that they leave with an orchid of their own. About the instructor: Bret Ullery has been growing orchids since 2006, turning a passion for these fascinating plants into years of hands-on experience with a wide variety of orchid genera and growing techniques. Alongside his wife, Ruth Ullery, Bret owns Accent Orchids, where their shared love of orchids continues to flourish through cultivation, education, and active involvement in the orchid community. Bret has held leadership roles in both the Florida West Coast Orchid Society and the Tampa Bay Orchid Society, including serving as President of both organizations. He currently serves as Vice President of the Florida West Coast Orchid Society, where he regularly shares his knowledge through educational programs held on the second Thursday of each month. As a speaker and educator, Bret’s goal is to make orchid growing understandable, approachable, and enjoyable for everyone—from beginners growing their first orchid to experienced growers looking to expand their knowledge. His presentations have covered topics such as: Orchids 101 Schomburgkia, now Myrmecophila Vandaceous Orchids: More Than Just Vandas Keeping Your Gifted Orchid Alive Alternative Methods of Potting and Mounting Bret believes that growing orchids should be an experience of discovery. Through his teaching, he encourages people to gain confidence, learn from their experiences, and discover just how rewarding orchid growing can be. With years of cultivation experience, leadership within local orchid societies, and his work with Accent Orchids, Bret brings a practical, relatable, and enthusiastic perspective to every presentation—helping audiences see that with the right knowledge and a little patience, anyone can enjoy the rewarding world of orchids.
