Orange, White, and Blue

This piano quartet concert featuring Beerthoven all-stars Sohee Kwon on piano, cellist Daniel Kopp, violist Luis Eduardo Bellorin and newcomer violinist Ben Kronk will pull together old and new threads of American classical music, from its early inspirations in the works of Dvorak and Brahms to the contemporary work Thousandth Orange by Caroline Shaw. As part of Beerthoven's continued celebration of the 250th anniversary of the United States, the program will also feature the world premiere of Freethinker by Karl Mitze (violist and composer for Invoke). The work commemorates the 1860s abolitionist group of German-Texans known as the "Freethinkers" who bravely stood against the Confederacy. In the words of the composer, Freethinker is "a reflection on the beautiful duality of our freedom as Americans to abide by our own religions and traditions free of oppression." Thanks to our sponsors, this program features two intermissions flush with warm pretzels generously provided by Easy Tiger, cold beer by Lazarus Brewing, wine, and non-alcoholic beverages--at no additional cost! This event will take place on the main, downstairs stage at the historic Saengerrunde Hall in downtown Austin; home to Austin's oldest cultural institution, the German singing society the Austin Saengerrunde.
