Odyssey Reading Group with Peter Pitzele

Steinberg Reading Room, Elting Memorial Library. Beginning on Thursday, September 3rd the Elting Memorial Library will host a six session reading group on Homer's Odyssey moderated by Peter Pitzele. Meetings will take place each Thursday from 9/3 to 10/8 from 12:30 PM to 1:30 PM. Water, tea, and coffee will be provided. Register to get an email reminder the day before each meeting. Registration is preferred and saves your spot. Full description from facilitator Peter Pitzele: "Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey has catalyzed an interest in one of the great origin stories of Western culture. For those who have the desire and patience to look into the 'original,' we are offering a six-session reading group at the Elting Library in the Steinberg Room on six successive Thursdays from 12:30-1:30 PM. (9/3 to 10/8). Bring a sandwich if you wish, and we will provide coffee or tea. The group will be led by Peter Pitzele: he studied Homeric Greek in school and later taught the Odyssey to young people and to adults. For our first gathering, he will focus our discussion on Books I – IV. In addition to the reading, he invites you to do some research about Athena: What does she represent---values, virtues, skills, and subjects---in the Greek imagination? No single translation is preferred, but those of Robert Fitzgerald, Richard Lattimore, Robert Fagels, and Emily Wilson are particularly readable. I highly recommend listening to the Odyssey as a recorded book: on Audible, the Robert Fitzgerald translation is very well done. It will bring you closer to the way the story-poem was once experienced."
