Join us at Flatbush Library for an afternoon of films exploring migration, displacement, memory, identity, resistance, and belonging—from New York City to the Gambia, Finland, Jamaica, and across the African diaspora. Line-up: 12:00–2:00 PM | Migration, Work & Belonging Unsanctioned in a Sanctuary City Created by high school filmmakers from Educational Video Center, this youth-led documentary follows immigrant street vendors in New York City amid increased ICE activity, asking what it means to live and work in a “sanctuary city.” The Strong Man of Bureng After building a new life in Finland, Gambian migrant and former UN soldier Essa returns home to Bureng, where the COVID-19 pandemic suddenly threatens his ability to return to Europe. An intimate story about migration, family, responsibility, and the search for security across borders. 2:30–4:30 PM | Displacement, Memory & What We Carry Lines of Displacement EVC youth filmmakers examine gentrification in New York City’s Chinatown, centering community voices, cultural identity, displacement, resistance, and the right to remain. Buckskin An experimental portrait of groundbreaking Black scientist Carroll B. Williams Jr. exploring family memory, environmental history, race, settler colonialism, and our relationship to the natural world. Today and Tomorrow An ordinary after-school day takes an unexpected turn when two best friends, Mariah and Kimberly, confront feelings that have remained unspoken. Mercy Poetry, dance, movement, and voice come together in a meditation on Black womanhood, race, language, and memory. Remedy for Broken Faith A woman confronting grief begins a journey of rediscovery, finding the courage to acknowledge emotions she has long buried and recovering her capacity to hope.
