Nordic Handcraft Workshop: Start Carving Tiny Folk with Maeve Gathje

Join carving instructor Maeve Gathje in a full-day workshop focused on honing carving skills to carve sculpted figures. Jump into the world of Scandinavian-style flat plane carving in this one-day class, focused on carving “tiny folk” or small characters. Maeve Gathje will get students started with the technique of carving faces and people “on the corner” of a rectangular block. This simple format is easy to get started with and still offers lots of great practice for new carvers to practice knife skills and exercise their creativity. In the morning, students will start on their two 1″ x 1″ x 3″ figures, about the size of a standard chess piece, with a focus on the cuts that define faces. In the afternoon, students will paint their characters using milk paint. Throughout the day, tool and material selection, knife safety techniques, and finishing options will all be discussed. Students will go home ready to carve a whole village of characters! Additional information: Advanced registration required. A $40 is due to instructor Maeve Gathje in class and covers all required tools, wood and milk paint for at least two 1″ x 1″x 3″ figures. Prerequisites: Physical ability: Wood carving requires good hand strength and dexterity, such as being able to open a pickle jar. Skill level: This class is open to beginners or students with previous carving experience who would like a refresher on basic carving techniques.
