The Program Caroline Shaw - Entr’acte Nokuthula Ngwenyama - Primal Message for String Orchestra Missy Mazzoli - These Worlds in Us Whitman College Orchestra Paul Luongo, director Antonín Dvořák - Symphony No. 9 in E minor, Op. 95 (“From the New World”) In collaboration with the Whitman College Orchestra What Makes This Concert Interesting Caroline Shaw’s Entr’acte was inspired by a Haydn string quartet. Shaw uses that older musical form as a starting point, then lets the music move in colorful and unexpected directions. In 1974, scientists sent a message into space from the Arecibo Observatory in Puerto Rico. Nokuthula Ngwenyama’s Primal Message turns that signal into music, using numbers and patterns to explore connection. Dvořák began the New World Symphony while living in New York, but he worked on much of it during a summer in Spillville, Iowa, a small town with a large Czech community.
