**Musicals, Music and Film Meet-Up Discussion: "Purple Rain" (1980)** *Just like a book club, we watch the movie before we meet up!* ***Dearly beloved we are gathered here today to get through this thing called "life"*** **Let’s talk about movies!** Join movie club member and event host Crystal H. for “Musicals, Music and Film”. Our first feature is “Purple Rain,” starring legendary artist and iconic musician Prince (his debut in film) who plays the “Kid." a rising star and frontman for *The Revolution.* The "Purple Rain" soundtrack narrates and accompanies Kid’s struggles with a violent homelife, conflicts with rival musician Morris (Morris Day), his strained personal relationships with his band and new love interest Apollonia (Apollonia Kotero). "Purple Rain" has both diegetic aka source music (music the characters are aware of and hear like performances) and non-diegetic music (music only the audience is aware). Prince’s music is the center piece of the Kid’s journey, his feelings and experiences. **Here’s how The Portland Movie Club meet-ups work:** Just like a book club, we watch the movie on our own time before we meet. We'll meet at Lucky Lab on SE Hawthorne at 4pm on the scheduled date. We'll typically have a sign at our table(s), but at least we'll try to be obvious and identifiable.
