Movie Club: “Dog Day Afternoon”

The Southeast Steuben County Library’s Movie Club is a way for folks who love movies to connect and discuss a selected movie each month. Amelia F.H Cueva will select movies that are either in the Library collection, and/or easily accessible for streaming free, and will lead a group conversation on the 3rd Thursday of the month from 5:30-6:30pm. Light refreshments provided. No sign up required, just show up. Important: Please watch the movie ahead of time. Movie Club is a discussion group only. The September Movie: Dog Day Afternoon, directed by Sidney Lumet, with an Oscar winning screenplay by Frank Pierson (based on a magazine article by P. F. Kluge and Thomas Moore). The film stars Al Pacino, John Cazale, and Charles Durning. Vincent Canby in the NYTimes writes: “Dog Day Afternoon,” is Sidney Lumet’s most accurate, most flamboyant New York movie…Mr. Lumet’s New York movies are as much aspects of the city’s life as they are stories of the city’s life… [the film is] is a gaudy street-carnival of a movie that rudely invites laughs at inappropriate moments, which is in keeping with the city’s concrete sensibility.” This movie can be streamed for free on Hoopla with your Library Card, or watched on YouTube with ads. There are also four physical copies in the library system that can be checked out. The film is from a time when airplane hijackings and other public criminal acts were “new” and became sensationalized “entertainment” for the evening news, magazines and tabloid newspapers. The reason for the robbery, which we won’t give away here, is as timely as ever.
