McFarland, USAWelcome to McFarland, CA. Set in 1987, the movie follows high school football coach Jim White, who needs a fresh start. He gets a teaching position at McFarland High School and moves his family from Boise, ID, to this predominantly Latinx, working-class town. For a while, it seems like things will not work out, and Jim struggles to find his place.However, noticing that several boys are fast, strong runners, he gets the idea to start a cross-country team. To assemble the team, he must convince parents to let their sons take precious time away from working in the fields to help put food on the table. He also needs to fully understand the realities of his students’ circumstances. After overcoming many obstacles and eventually gaining community support, the team makes it to the cross-country championship.
