Join Ben for an introduction to one-part and two-part plaster molds and a primer on glaze chemistry. Molds are a great way for ceramic artists to reproduce forms in clay. Students will leave with two small plaster molds that they make themselves. Ben will show multiple examples of plaster molds brought into class and we will talk about past and contemporary artists who have used molds in creating their work. The second half of class will be an introduction to glaze chemistry, providing students with an overview and basic understanding of the materials used in ceramic glazes. Students will also gain experience in testing glaze recipes, analyzing results, and adjusting formulas. While a lot of glaze recipes exist on the internet, not all should be trusted and this class will teach you some quick analysis tools to decide if a recipe you’ve found is trustworthy.
