In his sweeping and beautifully detailed book, San Francisco Bay Area: An Environmental History, David D. Schmidt traces how natural forces and human choices have shaped the landscape over thousands of years Grounded in meticulous research and accessible storytelling, Schmidt's book won a California Book Award Gold Medal, and it is an honor to welcome him here at the Oakland Public Library. Schmidt will give us a presentation on his research and book—with a particular focus on Oakland and the East Bay— and an audience Q&A and book signing will follow.
