Let’s Make+Take!—Join us for this engaging introduction to letterpress as we learn how to use the Vandercook press to communicate with impressions of text on paper—without ink! You’ll learn basic typesetting and take away examples of your efforts in blind embossing. No homework and no experience necessary. Just bring yourself and get ready to have some fun! Level: Beginner – no experience necessary Registration closes October 14, 2026 and includes all materials. Sample image by Elisabeth Boerwinkel WORKSHOP SUPPLIES: Registration includes all the materials you’ll need for class. Though not required, you may want to consider bringing the following supplies: (optional) Personal apron (we’ll have extras) or wear clothes that can get inky—even though we’re not using ink, it’s better to be safe than sorry (optional) Pencil and paper if you want to take notes A few ideas for what you’d like to print, such as a favorite word or short (3-5 word) phrase Note: For your safety we also recommend short sleeves only, close-toed shoes, and that long hair be tied back. MEET YOUR INSTRUCTOR: Jim Modrick has been active in the letterpress studio for over four years and is an ArtGym member at Pyramid Atlantic. He can also be found in the screenprinting studio as he continues reconnecting with ink on paper. Jim also engages his creative side through drawing and, most recently, in oil painting. As an arts administrator, Jim built a career that combined organizational management with a passion for learning. He explored the role of the arts in education focusing on creativity, leadership, and accessibility. These days he works as a Grants Management Specialist with the National Park Service and, for the past 20 years, Jim has called the Aspen Hill area of Montgomery County home. Follow Jim’s work on Instagram @jemodrick. What Students are Saying: “I enjoyed the “playful” aspect of letting participants explore and try things out on their own.”
